This standard provides advice and instructions for the design of belt guards, coupling guards, and drive shaft guards, focusing on personal safety and maintenance availability. The advice applies to the design of machine guards supported by directives relating to machine safety.
The standard provides basic examples of guard placement, design, dimensions, inspectability, and attachment. However, all guards are application-specific and must be designed based on prevailing conditions.
The standard applies to both the construction of new machinery and rebuilding of existing machinery.
The standard is a merger of two previous standards SSG3357E – “Belt guards” and SSG3358E – “Coupling guard and cardan shaft protection”.
